Eastern Box Turtle Characteristics
The Eastern Box Turtle is different from other turtles because it prefers land over water.
Also, it has a high-domed shell that is keeled. Keeled means "having or being shaped like a ridge".
Oddly, male Eastern Box Turtles have vivid red eyes, but females have yellow eyes. No one knows why this is.
The turtle's tail is small and wormlike.
This turtle ranges from between 4-8 1/2 inches long.
It has a beaked mouth and its ears are little more than holes in its head.
It's scientific name is Terrapene carolina.
